WHAT IS THE DIGITAL LEADER CANVAS?
The Digital Leader Canvas is a visual self-assessment framework that helps leaders and professionals reflect on their current leadership approach – and turn that reflection into a concrete development plan.
Inspired by the logic of the Business Model Canvas, the Digital Leader Canvas breaks leadership down into its most important dimensions for everyday hands-on leadership development.
It's not a personality test. It's not a scorecard. It's a thinking tool – designed for honest reflection, alone or with your team.
The Digital Leader Canvas was developed by Andre Ottlik, founder of the Digital Leader Program, based on over 15 years of working with leaders at startups, scale-ups, academia and international organisations.
HOW THE DIGITAL LEADER CANVAS WORKS
The canvas consists of eleven fields, arranged so that you move from self-reflection on the left to your leadership vision on the right. In the lower row, you map your challenges, your solutions and your personal success metrics.
You can work through the canvas on your own in 30–45 minutes – or use it as the foundation for a team workshop, a coaching session or a leadership development program.
Here's the recommended sequence:
Start with your vision of leadership excellence. Then reflect on your leadership and management qualities. Identify your signature strengths – the qualities that define your leadership style. Think about your network: who supports you, challenges you, helps you grow? Now shift perspective: how do others actually experience your leadership? The gap between your self-image and external perception reveals your real development areas. Finally, define concrete next steps and the metrics that will help you track your progress.
The canvas is available as a free PDF download for individual use and as a MURAL template for collaborative workshops and remote teams.
